Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was Lazio's season falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the board had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

One individual continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed the last one on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
